Career Opportunities at Graphic D-Signs, Inc.

Helpful Hints from the Staff:

  • Do not use Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica or any other standard, run-of-the mill fonts in your resume. You're a designer and you probably have hundreds to choose from!
  • Use of Brush Script, Commercial Script, or and other lame scripts in portfolio pieces will automatically disqualify you.
  • Cutting and pasting the cover letter you sent to the last 20 jobs you also applied for is also automatic grounds for disqualification. If you can't bother to write something fresh for us, it already tells us you're lazy and clearly not creative.
  • If you spell QuarkXPress wrong, that's not a good sign, especially since we're spelling it correctly here.
  • Saying in a cover letter how great you think our work is scores extra points, on the contrary, putting down any of our work will not make you look good. Our egos bruise easily.
  • Knowing obscure movie quotes, such as "So I got that going for me," and/or TV trivia, like who Art Vandelay is, will score you extra points.
  • Napoleon Dynamite knowledge a must. It's Summer all year long here, if you know what we mean. And if you don't know if the chickens have large talons - well, that's gonna be a prolem.
  • No one here is a prima donna. If you can't deal with occasionally typesetting a business form or scanning & retouching photos for a few hours, you're not going to like it here.
  • Read Dan's books. He likes that when you mention you've read 'em. Or that you've heard of him before. But really, his ego is not that big. As far as you know.
  • Did we mention we hate Brush Script?

Mid-Level Print and Web Interface Designer

We MAY BE looking for someone to grow with us in our New Jersey office in the 1st Quarter of 2008. Here's an idea of what we're going to be looking for in a mid-level Designer Position.

  • Team player who can work within a creative, and fun environment. I mean we get excited about fonts and CSS, and at the same time, we still admire Napoleon Dynamite's choice of typography for his 'Vote for Pedro' shirts. You know what we mean, right?
  • We need someone who can talk to clients, then take that information and help create a brilliant marketing campaign - coordinated for both print and web.
  • Branding is the core of this company's philosophy. Show us you know a little something about identity - especially for small businesses. Demonstrate you understand the importance of a consistent brand. Know how to design a logo? Even better.
  • Have ideas on how to grow this agency? We're open to listening to them. Have proven success in a new business role at your current job? Show us.
  • If you think you won't enjoy working on small business accounts - and are looking for a bigger agency environment, we're not going to be a good fit for you. We like small businesses. Corporate stuff is stifling to us. If your idea of a good time at work is creating ads for heart medications, you'll probably not like it here. We don't have one account that makes up more than 2% of our total business. Literally hundreds of accounts comprise our client base.
  • You need to be versatile. You're going to be jumping on a web comps in the AM and doing a brochure or letterhead design in the PM. Speed is nice too. And we love Freehand users. Multi-page layout is way cooler.
  • We don't proclaim to cure cancer here. While we take our work very seriously, at the end of the day - its ink on paper or pixels on the screen. If it's not fun for us, we're not going to be working on it. Life's too short. We're about making a difference in our clients businesses, and their lives - and having as much fun as possible in the process.

Here's the core requirements of our dream candidate.

  • About 3-5 years in an agency environment, preferably a smaller one, although if you worked at a bigger one, we won't hold that against you.
  • Demonstrated ability to work directly with clients, and translate their needs into design solutions.
  • BFA in Art or a degree in a related field, such as Marketing or Communications.
  • Dreamweaver MX
  • Fireworks MX
  • Quark XPress v6 or higher
  • Illustrator, v10 or CS
  • Photoshop. v7 or CS
  • Freehand MX (preferable, at least to Dan it is. It's not dead yet, Okay?)
  • Striped bass fishing skills. OK, that one is optional.

What do we have to offer? Competitive salary, a bunch of holidays, that 401k thing, Dental, couple of weeks of vacation time, summer Fridays. The usual stuff, or maybe not so usual depending on which agency factory environment you're coming from. We even have direct deposit (sweet!). Sometimes, you might even be able to work from home. If you do work from home, you will be able to set your own dress code (i.e.. pajamas). We don't run a sweatshop either. Pretty much 9-5ish, except for Dan, who seemingly works round the clock. This sounds way too good, doesn't it? This must be a cool place to work.

What should you do next? Do something creative. If you really like what we do, our best advice would be to do something cool for us. Most of the people who work for us have given us something that makes us stop in our tracks and say 'that's really neat.' Pieces employing Brush Script, Helvetica and even Trajan are not headturners (hint, hint). Comic Sans, of course, is making a comeback, so that's OK. Didn't you get the memo?

Send resumes (PDFs) and relevant samples (PDFs or links) to: jobs@graphicd-signs.com. Equally impressive would be your ability to actually MAIL us a nice cover letter (see above about what NOT to do in your cover letter) and a resume.

DO NOT CALL.Calling will only serve to aggravate Dan, who spends most of his day on the phone already. If you only work on PCs do not send a resumé. We all own stock in Apple. Seriously. And please buy the iPhone also, if you haven't already.
